NMTA State Conference 2017

The Nebraska Music Teachers Association (NMTA) 2017 Conference was hosted at Nebraska Wesleyan University in Lincoln in the middle of October.

I was particularly excited about the conference this year, as I had the opportunity to hear our guest clinician, Marvin Blickenstaff speak several times at NCKP in July. (My post about the NCKP conference is here.)   Marvin is a weath of knowledge, stories, and ideas; and truly loves teaching!

I had an opportunity to go out to dinner with Marvin and a few other colleagues on Thursday night. I  thoroughly enjoyed hearing how his music career began and some of the paths that lead him to teaching for the last 60 years!  After dinner, we were treated to a lovely concert at the Lied Center, featuring the Orphus Chamber Orchestra and world renown pianist Andre Watts!

Donella, Adrianne, and I enjoyed lots of time during the two days, bouncing ideas around. We discussed what we were learning and how to apply it in our studios.  It is fantastic to have such wonderful colleagues!

Friday morning opened with a panel discussion hosted by several well respected teachers from Omaha and Lincoln.

Some quotes and session highlights:

  • "Teachers open the door.  You enter by yourself." -Chinese Proverb
  • "Reading music is about teaching students to associate sound and symbols."-Marvin Blickenstaff
  • There were several wonderful sessions on teaching technique and lots of ideas that I am looking forward to introducing to the students in the next few weeks!

It's not a teachers conference without a picture with my "Piano Mom"!  Nancy has been a fabulous mentor for me over the last 4 years.  I look forward to opportunities to spend more time with her...there is always lots of laughter, talk of music and our studios, and Dove Dark Chocolates!

I'm already looking forward to the 2018 NMTA Conference in Kearney!
